Tibetan Buddhism and its Symbols

By Stephen Kubrick

In general, Buddhist symbols and their significance depend on the culture and the people. Everebody heard at least something about Eight Auspicious Symbols, dorje and bell, Mandala etc. In India, where Hinduism is mostly practiced, some of these symbols can be found and their significance or use differs from that of Buddhists. Around the 6th century, when the Buddha is known have lived, there is no trace of any Buddhist art that has been collected. To illustrate or explain a religious teaching, it is accepted that the Buddha used these symbols and forms of art, as depicted in the Buddhist scriptures. The Wheel of Life is one such example. Some carvings have however been discovered dating to Emperor Ashoka?s reign. It is claimed he converted to practicing Buddhism and made Buddhism popular around India and the surrounding countries.

Around the first century, all the Buddhist art excavations discovered have been purely symbolic in nature. The coming of the Buddha Tantra brought with it the art of Buddhist meditation by use of imagination and visualization techniques, a form of Buddhist meditation known as Tibetan Buddhism. A large collection of Buddhist art representing deities that was used in these forms of Buddhist meditation rituals can now be found in Buddhist temples throughout the region. Most of these collections were Buddhist literature and artwork.

Symbols as the wheel, lotus and the stupa were found in almost any Buddhist temple. Reflecting on these symbols was regarded as part of the Buddhist meditation ritual. Let?s consider some of these symbols in the light of current Buddhist meditation and religious practices.

One of the Buddhist art symbols is the bell. This symbol has a natural function and is believed to dispel wicked spirits. It consists of the moondisc, dorje and the lotus symbols. The bell complements the dorje in the religious light. While the bell has a feminine representation to it of wisdom, the dorje represents compassion in the masculine gender.

The dorje is a symbol used in Buddha to represent its indivisible and indestructible nature. It is a scepter that is used in Buddhist meditation as part of the religious practices. It is sometimes referred to as the Vajra.

Incense burning is also taken to be a significant part of Buddhism worship. During the incense offering, this is the time to offer specific requests of success, longevity and any personal need. After this, Buddhist meditation is performed and such qualities as love, joy and compassion are reflected upon during these meditation periods.

One location that is important in Buddhist worship is Mount Kailash. This mountain peak is located on the Himalayan Mountains and is regarded as the central point of our vast universe. It is an important location for Buddhist meditation and has a religious connection to the 4 main religions of the region. These religions are Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Bon.

To many, Buddhist art and its accompanying symbols are simply visual mantras. However, it is claimed that contemplating on the significance of these forms of art present in Buddhist temples and used in Buddhist meditation, one will build an inner connection with the represented aspect. - 13731

Discover How To Record Music The Right Way - Make Music

By Greg Hoffman

The most fundamental part of producing your personalized music is the recording level. This pertains to the level for the racks or the mixes. There has constantly been a standard answer for this being to set the level at maximum just below the digital 0. Referring to the top of the meter. Alas, numerous of the professionals will most likely tell you this's inaccurate.

One of the things you might want to keep in mind with this industry is not to believe everything you hear. (No pun intended). There're various individuals that would tell you whatever thing just that you will buy their products. Anyone that has been in the pc music realm would tell you that digital audio has just gotten to the point where sound quality is good.

Keep in mind 1 standard element about your quest of composing music and that is the purpose of recording sound. Which's of course so we could listen and relish it. You need to learn and be able to determine what parts of the music must be louder than several others. For illustration, a pop ballad should be lower on track than a thrash metal. A guitar solo should be above the regular back ground playing.

Your first inclination would be to utilize just your digital meters and record these separately. On the surface, it sounds logical, but as a matter of fact, you could end up with the genuinely opposite results. Reason being the digital recorders utilise peak meters, where as music listeners use their hearing signifying they utilise reasonable characteristics when judging the levels. If not done in the right way then it means the listener will be forced to turn the volume down.

You could prevent your frustrations if you just record everything at the right levels right from the starting. It will be right to share 1 track 'tween 2 instruments at least. This should only be done when the 2 specific instruments are not playing simultaneously. So you will record these instruments at the exact level that they will be at when physically playing the song. Use your estimation qualities to get the results that're accurate. You wish to hear what the end listeners should heae. They will not be utilising meters they'll be utilizing their natural ability of hearing.

Stay consistent with your whole album, say the listener has to keep getting up to re-adjust the volume you could bet they wont be too impressed.

If you try and do your sound recordings according to all the information that various people give you then you'll soon become discouraged. What might work in one song will for sure not work in some other. Then there would be all the controversy to sort through. Learn the basics, follow your judgment and trust your ears. Composing music is suppose to be an enjoyable event even if its your livelihood, if you didn't have passion for music it is unlikely you will even be required in computer music. - 13731

Art Technical Terms Explained!...

By Anna Meenaghan

Paper mache has been around for as long as I can remember. This form of art is produced by tearing up newspaper, soaking and bashing it around until it is a pulp, then it can be shaped into anything you care to think of.

The pulp you have now acquired is at the wet stage and this is when you need to apply glue or paste to it. Once you have completed this task, you always need to let it dry naturally. Now, just as if you were using wood, you can apply a primer before you go on to paint your article.

This is beneficial, as if you use this medium, it is light, so useful for creating so many things and is very strong.

Have you heard of Sugar Cane. Yes, this is a paper which is actually derived from the sugar cane plant. This too, is good for making Paper Mache, as it is very absorbent. You can also draw on this paper, it is fibrous, thick and comes in a variety of colours.

Gesso is a very useful medium, being a type of glue. What is the consistency? Usually a mix of plaster, whiting, white pigment, or chalk.

This will seal your canvas and the white gesso gives a reflective surface to paint on and hopefully keeps the canvas from rolling.

Impasto - This is canvas which has thick layers of paint. Usually formed by using your brush or palette knife, loading it with paint to form layers on the canvas. Making a heavy textured surface, which will have your bristle marks impressed on the canvas when you paint.

What is pigment? This is what is used to dye or colour the paint itself. This, as a paint medium, is made from minute particles as they have been ground very finely. In time gone by the consistency came from animals, plants and minerals. Nowadays a lot are made from synthetics.

Embossed - A surface that has been stamped or marked so that you have a pattern, or it could also be carved. This, sometimes, is done on metal with a hammer.

Fixatives are a way of trying to preserve your painting. These can be sprayed or brushed on.

Positive and Negative - Consideration needs to be given to the painting and what is contained in it, to decide upon the positive and negative sections. The positive shape has to be your main object or section.

What remains, in this instance, will be the negative shape. Time has to be apportioned equally to both shapes for it to work well.

Grid is when you draw square boxes on to a card backdrop for still life drawings. This makes it much easier to decide where the shadows and shapes should be positioned on your drawing.

Acrylic Retarder will increase the open drying time. It can be mixed (10% maximum) with the paint. Works well for shading and blending, or even wet on wet painting and helps to combat a skin on your palette.

Acrylic Gloss Varnish, if mixed with colours, will increase the way the paint flows, also their transparency and luminosity. This is good for quick drying glazes. It also makes your brush strokes blend well on your surface and is certainly flexible. - 13731
