The Cary Grant Story

By Danny Hoover

Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach in Horfield, Bristol back in 1904. He grew up in a middle class family and was considered to have a fairly average childhood. While he would not learn about it until he reached his twenties, his mother was institutionalized when he was 9 for a mental illness. By the time he turned 14, he decided to leave his home and school, faked his age and father's signature and joined Bob Pender's comedic troupe.

He was able to learn many talents while touring with Bob Pender's troupe including acrobatics and pantomime. While he was with this troupe, he was able to see the vast majority of England but in his heart he knew that he was destined for something greater that could only lay in America. He was chosen along with 6 others from the troupe - 7 boys in total - to perform in the Broadway musical, Good Times.

In 1931 he left the Broadway scene and headed off to California to advance his career. Changing his name to Cary Grant, he managed to get a screen test with Paramount and was accepted. A year later he would debut in the movie entitled This is the Night and would immediately become a success.

Mae West fell in love with Cary grant and his on-screen charm made him the perfect choice for her movies. Within a year, Cary Grant was in the movie 'I'm No Angel' as well as 'She Done Him Wrong'. However it would not be until 1935 that he was to appear in the movie 'Sylvia Scarlett' and finally get his big break along side his co-star, Katherine Hepburn.

It seemed as if the dynamic duo of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn were a perfect match, because after his contract with Paramount expired in 1937, he chose to become an independent. This choice allowed him to choose the roles he wanted to play rather then being assigned to them, and as a result, with Hepburn at his side he was able to release some of the fines comedies of his career.

Cary Grant would eventually retire from making films when he turned 62 and instead focus on family. He wanted to be a father and a husband and while he may have been a charmer on the big screen, his 5 marriages proved that off screen, it wasn't so easy. He ended up having only one child, a daughter whom he had with his 3rd wife. In 1986, Cary grant had a serious stoke and passed away leaving behind him a large and very loving fan base that still enjoy watching his movies today. - 13731
